The Art of Sketching in the Republic of Genoa

Prints and Drawings

15 June – 25 September 2017

Overview

This exhibition illustrates the prolific artistic activity in Genoa between the 16th and 18th centuries, driven by a highly favorable economic and cultural context. Their numerous financial and trading ventures made the Republic’s powerful local dynasties a dominant force in the Europe of the time.

This presentation of the handsomest pieces from the Louvre’s collection also highlights the publication of this regional collection of some 600 works, the outcome of ten years’ research. Thus this is the opportunity to offer the public fresh discoveries and to address such issues as the distinction between Luca Cambiaso’s originals and the many copies that have found their way into the corpus; as well as being of interest to specialists and connoisseurs, these questions are instructive for visitors as a whole.
